The villages of Grayslake and Libertyville have requested approval from Lake County to install “paddle style” delineators along either Winchester Road in Libertyville or Allegheny Road in Grayslake (for a distance of up to 100 feet in each direction of the railroad crossing) in order to meet the criteria established by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for a quiet zone along the Metra/Milwaukee District North line. Two previous quiet zone applications submitted by the villages of Grayslake and Libertyville have been denied by the FRA. Recent meetings with FRA staff indicate that the installation of delineators at one of these locations would help meet the quiet zone criteria. The villages are working with Lake County on an intergovernmental agreement which will allow the installation and maintenance of the delineators. A consulting firm working for Grayslake and Libertyville plans to resubmit a quiet zone application to the FRA while the villages work with Lake County to finalize the intergovernmental agreement. The Village of Libertyville has been successful in working with other area communities to obtain quiet zone designations on both the EJ&E and North Central railroads.
