Coordinated by the Audubon Council of Illinois, the Bird City Illinois program celebrates municipalities that "demonstrate an active and ongoing commitment to the protection and conservation of bird populations and their habitats." Libertyville is only the fifth municipality in Illinois to receive the recognition, joining Rockford, Waukegan, Freeport, and Grayslake.
