Bicycle Advisory Commission

The Commission assess and reviews the bike path system within the Village, and, where required, adjoining governments for the use by the citizens of Libertyville.   The Commission acts as an advocate for bicycle programs within the Village and other government units, and fosters bicycle safety through education, program enrichment and program coordination with Village departments.

Reports to the Village Board Public Works Committee regarding recommendations for bicycle programs with the village.

Events
Smart Cycling Youth Skills Course
Date:  Saturday, May 30, 2026 

Time:  Event runs 9:00 am to 12:00 pm - Check In begins at 8:45 am. Course takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Arrive anytime between 8:45 am and 11:20 am to check in. 

Location: Highland Middle School, 310 W. Rockland Road, Libertyville - Blacktop and Parking Lot at the Northwest Corner

Participation: The skills course was developed by the League of American Bicyclists to benefit young riders of all ages but is generally best suited for rising 4th through 9th graders. Skills Course will be overseen by League Cycling Instructors with the League of American Bicyclists.

The course starts by teaching helmet fit and bike checks, then builds through a progression of skills and strategies ranging from tricks for smooth starts and stops, to more advanced skills like obstacle avoidance and using hand signals, up to how to properly navigate crosswalks (younger kids) and neighborhood intersections. The final station involves applying all the skills learned up to this point.

Pre-registration online is mandatory.  A registration form must be completed by an adult for each minor attending the event.  Registration is available until May 28, 2026.  Contact Laura Ditanto at publicworks@libertyville.com with questions.

Community Bike Ride- SAVE THE DATE

Date:  Sunday, September 13, 2026 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am 

Location: Adler Park, 1500 N. Milwaukee Avenue  

The event includes a 2.5-mile bike ride and a 5-mile bike ride. Each ride is guided by members of the Libertyville Bicycle Advisory Commission and Libertyville Police Department bike unit. There will be local vendors in attendance, Fire, Police & Public Works vehicles, giveaways, Smart Cycling skills training for kids, and more!  Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Bicycle Plan

Public Works Staff and Civiltech Engineering worked to create the Village's first Bicycle Plan.  The Bicycle Plan was completed to provide a framework for the Village to prioritize bicycle-related capital improvements and recommendations on the location and various types of bicycle facilities throughout the Village for a safe and accessible bicycle system for all ages and abilities to amenities with the Village.  The Bicycle Plan is available here.
