Electrical Licensing Information
Licensing
At this time, in Illinois, there is no State Electrical License like you might find in other states. This may change in the future, but in the mean time, the Village of Libertyville, as well as several other Illinois cities and towns, depend on municipal electrical licenses to help ensure a degree of electrical competence. Libertyville is one such municipality that issues electrical contractor licenses based on Illinois state guidelines.
As might be expected, having such a diversity of licensing bodies creates a wide variety of quality levels of licensed electrical contractor. Because of this, many towns may or may not accept an electrical license from another municipality based on these perceived quality levels.
Since the beginning of Libertyville's licensing program, we have enjoyed the privilege of having a well respected and widely accepted license. This is due mostly to the high standards we maintain. We require a 70% passing grade on our open-book electrical exam, as well as a minimum of 4 years (8,000 hours) documented experience in the electrical field. This could be in the form of an apprenticeship program, military training, verifiable on-the-job electrical experience, etc. All work experience must be under the supervision of a licensed electrician. Please read the Electrical Exam Requirements handout for more information.
Many people ask if there is a sample exam or study aids that are available. We have created a sample exam for you to practice with. We strongly suggest that you try to work out the problems before you look at the answers!
In addition, there are several other sources of study aids you may wish to enlist. Although we do not endorse any particular book or book seller, here are links to several websites you may find useful:
All exams have been updated to the 2014 or 2017 NEC. Other versions of the code may have differing answers and could be marked as "wrong".
