About
Ruse burglaries are those in which an offender distracts their victim in order to commit theft. These are often committed in pairs where one offender will distract the victim while the other enters the victim's home. Offenders may claim to be from utility companies checking water or electrical lines, contractors offering sealant or blacktop work, or village employees with concerns for the home's property lines or safety.
Prevention
Protect yourself with these reminders:
- Require that workers show identification prior to allowing them into the house or on your property.
- If you choose to speak with a solicitor or utility worker, never leave your front door unlocked or unattended.
- If someone comes to your house asking for help, tell them you will call the police for them.
- Keep an extra watch on elderly neighbors and family.
- Educate your relatives and neighbors about ruse burglaries.
- Immediately report suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1. If possible, try to obtain the vehicle license plate, color, make/model, and offender description.

About
Unlocked vehicles are an easy target for criminals. Many vehicle burglaries and, to a lesser degree, stolen vehicles occur as a result of vehicles being left unlocked. Offenders may walk through neighborhoods trying vehicle door handles in hopes of finding one that is unlocked.
Prevention
Protect yourself with these reminders:
- Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
- Keep any personal belongings inside your vehicle out of sight.
- Lock all vehicle doors.
- Avoid leaving keys inside your vehicle. Instead, take them inside your home to a secure location.
- Follow the #9PMRoutine! Set an alarm on your phone each night to remind yourself to remove valuables from your vehicle, lock the doors to your vehicle and home, turn on exterior lights, and activate all alarms and security systems.
